• 동료들과의 '더치페이 (Dutch Pay)'

  • 나이스보스 동료들과 함께 점심을 먹을 때, 최근 한국에서는 각자 먹은 금액을 따로 결제하는 '더치페이'가 아주 자연스러운 문화입니다.

  • 카운터에서 "각자 계산할게요(Gak-ja gye-san-hal-ge-yo)"라고 말하고 자신의 카드를 내밀면 직원이 알아서 금액을 나누어 결제해 줍니다.

  • 또는 한 명이 전체 금액을 먼저 카드로 결제하고, 나머지 사람들이 모바일 뱅킹 앱(토스, 카카오페이 등)으로 그 사람에게 자신의 몫을 송금하기도 합니다.

[Guide] Korea's No-Tip Culture & Splitting the Bill (Dutch Pay)

One of the things expats find most relaxing about living in Korea is the absolute lack of a tipping culture. Here is a guide to Korean payment etiquette and how to smoothly split the bill with your coworkers.

• Absolutely NO Tipping!

  • In Korea, service charges are already included in the price at restaurants, cafes, taxis, and hair salons. If you leave cash on the table to show appreciation, the staff will likely run after you thinking you forgot your change! A warm "Gam-sa-ham-ni-da" (Thank you) is the best tip you can give.

• How to Pay at a Restaurant

  • Unlike in many Western countries, you do not ask for the check while sitting at your table. The standard etiquette is to take the physical bill (usually left on your table when the food arrives) and bring it to the front counter/register on your way out to pay.

• "Dutch Pay" with Coworkers

  • When grabbing lunch with your Nice Boss colleagues, splitting the bill—commonly referred to as "Dutch Pay" in Korea—is completely natural and expected.

  • Simply tell the cashier, "Gak-ja gye-san-hal-ge-yo" (We will pay separately), and hand them your cards. The staff is very used to dividing the total.

  • Alternatively, one person might pay the full amount with their card, and the others will instantly wire their share using a mobile banking app (like Toss or KakaoPay).
