법무부는 지난 27회 발표회에서 선정된 196건 중 “입국심사 날인 생략”, “체류기간 만료 예고 통지문 발송 개선” 등 109건(55.6%)을 실제 정책·행정에 반영해 온 경험을 바탕으로, 이번에 선정된 10개 과제 역시 신속히 제도에 반영할 계획입니다. 정성호 법무부장관은 “급변하는 환경 속에서 AI 기술을 접목한 스마트 시스템을 구축해 투명하고 공정한 이민행정을 구현해야 한다”고 강조하며, 인구구조 변화와 글로벌 인재 경쟁에 선제적으로 대응하겠다고 밝혔습니다

On November 28, 2025, the Korea Ministry of Justice (Immigration and Foreign Policy Headquarters) held the 1st “AI-based Immigration Policy & Administrative Innovation Contest” at the Government Complex Gwacheon International Conference Hall. The event is an upgraded version of the annual policy idea contest that has been running since 2007, now redesigned to encourage immigration officers to actively use AI in immigration policy and administration.

This year, a total of 81 ideas were submitted, and 10 projects advanced to the final round. Finalists proposed innovative measures such as using AI and big data to classify visa and stay categories, applying AI-based automated immigration inspection for short-term visitors, and establishing a dedicated agency to attract global talents. Presentations were delivered in creative digital formats, including avatar-style videos and podcast-type audio. The grand prize went to an officer from Gimpo Airport Immigration Office, who suggested an AI-supported interview and pattern-analysis system to better block high-risk travelers, and a total of 10 officers received awards.

Over the past 27 contests, 196 projects have been awarded and 109 of them (55.6%), including the abolition of fingerprint stamping for Korean nationals and improved expiry-notice letters for foreign residents, have actually been implemented in policy and practice. Building on this track record, the Ministry plans to swiftly reflect the 10 winning AI-based proposals in its systems. Minister Jung Seong-ho stressed that integrating AI into immigration services is crucial to building a transparent and fair immigration system and to proactively responding to demographic change and the global competition for talent.
